Alline Garris

Alline Bounds Powell Garris born April 28, 1927 was the only daughter of Woodie Hall and Minnie Idell Merrill Bounds. She died October 3, 2022 surrounded by members of her loving family. Alline graduated from Jackson High School and attended Mississippi State College for Women (now Mississippi College for Women) at Columbus, MS and later graduating from the University of Alabama in 1949.

Alline married Dr. Daniel Drury Powell, III in 1948. Their children are Daniel D. Powell IV, Andrew Merrill Powell and David Hall Powell. After being widowed in 1955 she taught school at JHS for several years while studying for her master's in the summers.

Later she married John Marshall Garris of Leroy, a much decorated World War II Army Officer. They had a son, John Franklin Garris. After her husband's untimely death, Mrs. Garris taught school at LHS and was a member of Leroy Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School. She was also a member of WMU for many years and a charter member of the Gamma Epsilon Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, a professional honor society for women educators.

She reared his children, her children and their son John Franklin at Garris Hill, a historic home on the Alabama Registry of Landmarks and Heritage located on Highway 43 in Leroy, AL. She lived there for more than 50 years.

Alline loved her family most of all but also enjoyed traveling and reading.

Preceding her in death were her hubands, Dr. Daniel Drury Powell III and John Marshall Garris; brothers, W. T. Bounds, Hassell Bounds and Roland Bounds. Children, Martha Garris Crim and William "Bill" Harry Garris.

Alline is survived by her children, Daniel D. Powell, IV (Gwendolyn Overstreet Powell), Andrew Merrill Powell (Amelia Little Powell), David Hall Powell (Cynthia Overstreet Powell), John Franklin Garris and Marsha Garris Lindblom (Hunter Lindblom); grandchildren, Dana Sheldon Powell Moseley (Corey Moseley), Daniel Drury Powell V (Jenilee Slayton Powell), Matthew James Powell (Kari Bagley Powell), Christy Amelia Powell, David Ryan Powell (Mary Margaret Powell), Casey Greer Powell (Amanda Walker Powell), Calhoun Bowling Powell (Allie Pruitt Powell), Timothy Howard Lindblom (Susan Matthews Lindblom), Samuel Lindblom (Paige Parks Lindblom), Emily Lindblom King (Jeff King), Walter Marshall Crim (Shari Crim), Ellen Adamson (Rob Adamson), William Crawford Crim, Jennifer Kay Garris, William Bradley Garris (Lori Sheffield Garris); daughter-in-law, Kay Garris; son-in-law, Walter Crim as well as 32 great grandchildren and numerous other relatives and loved ones.

Funeral service will be held Thursday, October 6, 2022 at 11:00 am at Leroy First Baptist Church. Visitation will be held for one hour prior. Interment will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery.

Active Pallbearers will be Dru Powell, Matt Powell, Corey Moseley, Ryan Powell, Casey Powell and Cal Powell.

Honorary Pallbearers will be all of her beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Alline's honor to the First Baptist Church of Leroy, Post Office Box 5, Leroy, AL 36548 or "Shooting 2 Change" Autism Awareness Organization inspired by Mrs. Garris's great grandson, Parker Powell at P.O. Box 117 Saraland, AL 36571.
