Arthur "Sonny" Rowland

June 21, 1944 — October 13, 2024

Arthur Alvis "Sonny" Rowland, Jr. 80, passed away on October 13, 2024, at Washington County Nursing Home. He was born on June 21, 1944, to his parents Arthur Alvis, Sr. and Myrtice (McGraw) Rowland. Sonny retired from AEC Power Plant after many years of dedicated employment. He also retired from the National Guard after several decades of service. Sonny was an avid Auburn University fan and loved to watch football. He took that love of sports and spent much of his time being an umpire and referee for a variety of sporting events throughout the community for all ages, ranging from kids leagues to college sporting events. After retirement, Sonny's favorite past time included making memories with his family. He also enjoyed taking care of and raising chickens. Sonny never met a stranger. He loved to converse and fellowship so much so that he was elected as the Resident Council President of Washington County Nursing Home; a duty he proudly undertook to the delight of his new-found family, the devoted and caring staff and his beloved fellow residents at Washington County Hospital and Nursing Home. Sonny's family grew even more when the staff of Vital Caring Hospice stepped in to assist in caring for him.

Sonny was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Linda Faye Rowland; his brother-in-law, Pat Howze; and his son-in-law, Brian Nichols.

He is survived by his sons, Tre' (Jennifer) Rowland and Duane (Lisa) Rowland; his daughter, Denise (Aaron) Carpenter; his sisters, Margaret Howze and Dorothy (Fred) Savoy; his brothers, Robert (Karen) Rowland, Tommie (Judy) Rowland, and Dyrl (Connie) Rowland; his grandchildren, Tori Rowland, Ty Rowland, Juliana Abston, Kaylee Abston, John Abston, Cade Abston, Brooke (Jarod) Brewer, Blake Perry, Beth (Garrett) Brand, Keith Nichols, Leanna (Chris) Clements and Aaron (Kelly) Carpenter; 10 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and loving friends.

Private services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Washington County Nursing Home, Activity Department, P.O. Box 1299, Chatom, AL 36518.
