Audrey Henson

Audrey Henson, or Mémé as her grandchildren called her, quietly passed away on Saturday, October 1, 2022, at her home in Chatom, Alabama at the age of 90. Her husband of 67 years, Davis Henson Jr., passed away two years earlier at the same age. What a blessing to have them with us so long!

Audrey was born in Sims Chapel on January 29, 1932, the daughter of Powell Bates and Gladys Lillian Johnston. She attended Leroy High School, where she graduated in 1948. She married Davis Minor Henson, Jr. on January 4, 1953. They lived in Washington, D.C. and Mobile, Alabama, before building a home in Chatom in 1957.

Audrey worked for the Washington County Board of Education as the bookkeeper before retiring. She was a devout Christian and taught Sunday School and Training Union at Chatom Baptist Church. She was a member of the Junior Women's Club, Junior Miss Pageant Committee, Library Board, Potpourri Club, and Chatom Cemetery Committee. She was an avid fan of Auburn Athletics and loved to travel to the football games with Davis in their motor home. She also traveled extensively in the U.S. and overseas. Her favorite pastime was telling others about her travels and showing off her photo albums.

Besides her husband, Audrey was preceded in death by her two loving sisters, Ruby Lee Smith and Glendyne Parnell.

Audrey is survived by her two sons, Paul Davis Henson and Clay Dudley Henson, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Paul's family includes wife Amy; children Ivy Bell, husband Braden and their sons Grayson and Barrett; Davis Henson; Daley Snell and husband Patrick. Clay's family includes wife Sherry; children Pierce Henson; Lauren Henson; Max Witt and his son Clark.

Audrey was greatly loved and admired by the community and her church. The family wishes to thank her friends who visited and spent time with Audrey and Davis during the last years of their lives at home. We especially want to thank Shalinda "Sissy" Abston and Tonia Johnson for the kindness and love shown as caregivers.
