Barney 'Ray' Covington, Jr., 68, of Chatom, passed away February 26, 2022 at Mobile Infirmary. He was born July 2, 1953 in Biloxi, MS. Ray was a carpenter by trade and owned his own business. He was successful for many years remodeling and fixing up houses in the area. He proudly served as a Corporal in the United States Marine Corps and was enlisted during the Vietnam era. Ray enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, and fishing, especially bass fishing. He traveled throughout the Southeast competing in fishing tournaments. Perhaps one of his proudest accomplishments was qualifying for and making the Alabama B.A.S.S. Nation (ABN) state team, which gave him an opportunity to qualify for the Bassmaster Classic. He cherished the time he spent with his family and friends.
Preceded in death by his parents Barney Ray Covington, Sr. and Jewel Sullivan Shimek.
Survived by his daughter, Shannon (Brock) Carpenter of Chatom, AL; sister, Debbie (Allan) Wolff of Ledbetter, TX; brother, Richard Covington of Montgomery, AL; sister, Peggy Covington of Phoenix, AZ; and sister, Bonnie (Ed) Peddycoart of Arab, AL. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends, especially his very dear friend, Phil (Lila) Williams of Chatom, AL.
Memorial Services will be at 1 p.m. on March 12, 2022, at Lathan Funeral Home in Chatom. Bro. Terry Hartley will be officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted at the memorial service to be distributed at local fishing tournaments in his memory.
