Bettye Jean Henson, 89, of Chatom passed away August 3, 2024 at Washington County Nursing Home. Bettye Jean was born May 19, 1935 to J.A. and Lois Baker in Auburn where she went on to graduate from Auburn University. Bettye Jean was a devoted Christian and an active member of Chatom Baptist Church where she was part of the WMU. She was also extremely involved in the community of Chatom. Bettye Jean served as DHR Chairman of the Board, was a member of the Washington County Cowbell Association, was part of the Potpourri Club and the Junior Women's Club as well as so much more. She held many jobs over the years from teaching to catering to assisting her husband, Dr. Joe Henson, at his clinic; she was definitely a woman of many talents. Bettye Jean loved to cook and share her creations with others; she even did catering for a while. She enjoyed tending her flowers and plants; she grew some of the most amazing ferns which would occasionally disappear from her porch having been borrowed for an event in the community which she never minded. Bettye Jean loved to celebrate the people in the community and hosted many wedding showers through the years. She was an avid card player having multiple groups she participated in playing 'Hand and Foot'. Bettye Jean will be loved and missed by all who knew her.
Bettye Jean is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Joe Henson; daughters, Leigh Ann Henson and Jane Marie Henson; parents, J.A. and Lois Baker; and siblings, Richard Baker, Laverne Baker, and Shelby Baker.
She is survived by her daughter, Sally H. (Jeff) Bailey; grandchildren, Jacob Henson Bailey and Leighanna Jane Bailey; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends.
Services will be held Wednesday, August 7, 2024 at Chatom Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the funeral begins at 11:00 a.m. with Bro. Jerry Robinson officiating and Pastor Willie James Woodard and Harold Crouch speaking. Interment will follow in Chatom Town Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Carl Craig, Lyle Dease, Clay Henson, Paul Henson, Robert F. Schell and Milton Schell. Honorary pallbearers will be her card playing buddies.
