Calvin Mcdonald

Calvin Coolidge McDonald, 90, of Dickinson, AL, passed away Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at a local hospital. Funeral services will be Monday, November 17, 2014 at Lathan Funeral Home in Grove Hill at 2:00 PM. Rev. Jack Wright will officiate. Interment will follow in Magnolia Lawn Cemetery.


A native of Thomasville, AL, Mr. McDonald has resided in Dickinson since retiring from military service in 1965. He was a past Commander of VFW Post 5106, Benson-Jackson-Mathers Post in Thomasville, AL, and a member of the Air Force Sergeant's Association. Mr. McDonald was a Regional Circulation Manager for the Mobile Press Register and a Transportation Supervisor for the Clarke County School System. He was a baseball and Atlanta Braves fanatic and a zealous Alabama football fan. Mr. McDonald was a retired U.S. Air Force Master Sergeant and a veteran of World War II, where he flew 66 combat missions, including two on D-Day. He was also a Veteran of the Korean War, the Vietnam era and the Berlin Air Lift. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Georgia Maxine McDonald.


He is survived by his second wife, Ellen T. McDonald; his children, Greg McDonald of Washington, D.C., Mike McDonald (Lesley) of Evans, GA, Don McDonald of Monroeville, AL, and Tracy McDonald of Fayetteville, GA; five sisters, Quida McIntyre of Coffeeville, AL, Faye Stephens (Everette) of Grove Hill, AL, Marlene Brock of Thomasville, AL, Ann Welsh of Elsie, NE, and Theta Ertsgard of Boston, MA; three grandchildren, Patrick McCarthy of Fayetteville, GA, Caitlin Turner of Clifton, VA and Jillian Turner of New York, NY; and numerous nieces and nephews.


The family will receive friends on Monday from 1:00 pm until the service hour at Lathan Funeral Home in Grove Hill.
