Doris Jones London, 87, of Chatom, passed away on April 6, 2024, peacefully at her home surrounded by loved ones. She was born on April 10, 1936, to parents William Curtis and Nonie Mae Sullivan Jones. Doris was born in Hobson, Alabama and resided in Washington County Alabama for the majority of her life around many of her relatives and friends. She was active in High School as Head Cheerleader and member of the "W" Club as well as other organizations. Voted most popular, likely to succeed and best sport by her peers. Early in her life she worked as a waitress at Richardson's Café and as a secretary for Attorney Grady Hurst in Chatom, Alabama. She attended Livingston University.
She met the love of her life, Barry, while he was stationed with the Navy Air Wing Unit at Barren Field. They started their life together in Saraland, Alabama and lived there for many years near her close relatives and friends. While there she worked as a secretary with China Doll Rice and Mobile Gas Company and Barry worked at Scott Paper Company. They then purchased land in Burbank, Alabama with plans to build a home and found an opportunity to own and operate a grocery store in Fruitdale, Alabama. Barry continued to work in Mobile at Scott Paper Company while Doris ran London's Grocery. When her Maine family needed help they moved to Sherman Station, Maine and again were surrounded by many relatives and lifelong friends. After several years, they returned to Washington County, Alabama to operate a chicken farm, raising 20,400 chickens in two row houses for Marshall Durbin. After a number of years and selling the farm, Doris and Barry moved to Rutan, Alabama and she worked for Nealy Gas Company for many years. She enjoyed puzzles, square dance, cross stitch, crochet, going up to camp, playing cards and dominos, old home days and family picnics.
Preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Barry London, her parents, sisters; Pearline Jones Stoker and Murline Jones Chancellor.
Survived by her children, son Glenn (Amanda) London of Rutan, Alabama and daughter Pam (Erik) Gray of Semmes, Alabama, grandchildren Becky (Justin) Williams, Beth (Anthony) Roney, John (Megan) Gray, Kyle (Samantha) Gray, Russell (Jackie) Gray, great-grandchildren Tinley and Caroline Williams, Macon Roney, Mckinley and Corbin Gray, Kaylynn, Luka, and Karter Gray, Summer and Jack Gray. Her brother Norvelle (Diane) Jones, many nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Justin Williams, Anthony Roney, John Gray, Kyle Gray, Russell Gray and Erik Gray.
Graveside services will be at 11:15 a.m. on Monday, April 8, 2024, at Jones-Beech Cemetery in Hobson. There will be a visitation at Lathan Funeral Home in Chatom from 10-11 a.m. The Rev. Holly Morales will be officiating. Online condolences may be shared at www.lathanfuneralhome.com
