Francis Earl Powell, 79, of Grove Hill, passed away March 30, 2019 at his residence with his wife of 60 years by his side. He was born May 13, 1939 in Suggsville to Kossie P. and Agnes Hicks Powell. A graduate of Clarke County High School, he received a B.S. degree in business administration and a minor in Marketing from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, MS. Upon college graduation, he went to work at Scotch Plywood as sales manager and remained employed there for 54 years. Seeing a need for more plywood transportation, he started his trucking company business, Francis Powell Enterprises, Inc. in 1970.
He served in the military police division of the Alabama National Guard; his unit was called into active duty during the Berlin Crisis of 1960-61. He was a member of Tompkins Baptist Church, a charter member of the Grove Hill Lion's Club and the Grove Hill Jaycees of which he served as a director.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Thomas Ray Powell, Bobby Neal Powell and Henri Powell.
Mr. Powell's family includes his wife, Jimmie Frances Powell; son, Jason DeWitt Powell, Sr., (deceased); daughter, Mary Frances "Molly" Powell; grandchildren, Jason DeWitt (Chelsea) Powell, Jr. Sarah Leighton Powell, Maurice Paul Powell, Powell Adams Agee, Jaclynn Blair Powell, Avaleigh Frances Reynolds; great-grandchild, Russell Witt Powell; siblings, Devane (Mary Nell) Powell, Royce (Martha Jo) Powell, Shelby Sullivan, Jane (Ray) Sheffield and faithful friends, Shirley Davis and Renee Snell and Terri Carpenter.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, April 2, 2019 at Tompkins Baptist Church in Grove Hill with Dr. Johnny Kendrick officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. Interment will follow the service at Magnolia Lawn Cemetery in Grove Hill with Lathan Funeral Home directing.
Pallbearers are Jason DeWitt Powell, Jr., Maurice Paul Powell, Powell Adams Agee, Dennis Powell, Randy Sheffield, Tony Sheffield, Willie McMillan, Jerry Kennedy, Ty Dickinson, Dana Becton, Charlie Doby, Gray Skipper and Bo Cross.
Honorary pallbearers are faithful friends and family that called or came and visited during his illness, his employers and co-workers at Scotch Plywood, his plywood customers of so many years and the faithful people, past and present, that worked for his company - Francis Powell Enterprises, Inc.
