George Edward "Ed" Gipson, 74, of Tibbie, passed away Tuesday, August 3, 2021 at Washington County Hospital in Chatom. He was born in Franklin County, TN on December 8, 1946 to George William Gipson and Mildred Ward Gipson. An avid hunter, he had been employed as a sawmill manager at several area mills including International Paper, Georgia Pacific and Balfour Lumber Company. He was an instrument rated pilot, Ham Radio operator and devoted much of his time to training Labradors for field trials. He was also an innovator, having been awarded a U.S. patent for his wood drying system, and he even built his own 1934 Model Ford.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Linda Joy Lee and step grandchild, Breanna Bumgarner.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra Bumgarner Gipson; children, Mark Edward (Susie) Gipson, Sandy Kay (Rob) Martin; grandchildren, DeAnna (Steven) Helms, Casey Gipson, Carmen Walker, Ryan Walker; step children, Machelle (Wayne) Farley, Michael (Toisha) Bumgarner; step grandchildren, Beth Wheeler, Brittney (Brian) Underwood, Timbra Bumgarner, Chris Bumgarner; siblings, Rev. Billy (Teresa) Gipson, Ricky Gipson, Susan Hosay and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday, August 5, 2021 at Lathan Funeral Home in Chatom with the Rev. Billy Gipson officiating and Lathan Funeral Home directing.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Humane Society or Washington County Hospital.
