Gladys Ryser Mathews, 103, of Grove Hill passed away November 18, 2016 at her residence. She was born February 24, 1913 to William Peter and Glida Hoven Ryser. A longtime member of Union Methodist Church, she loved her church family and was active in the Women's Misssionary Society and Women's Society Christian Service. She was also a member of the Home Demonstration Club, active with the March of Dimes, served as a poll worker in Clarke County elections. She was well-known for her cooking skills and hospitality.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Marvin C. Mathews and siblings, Charlie Earl Ryser, Joe Ryser, Johnny Ryser, Pete Ryser and Louise Ryser.
She is survived by children, M. Gayle (Jean) Mathews; Gerald Braxton Mathews, William Ryser (Sheron) Matthews, all of Grove Hill; grandchildren, Tommy (Debra) Mathews, Courtney M. (Timmy) Windham; great-grandchildren, Mallory M. (Colby) Powell, Thomas Mathews, Brianna Mathews, Lauren Mathews, Blake Bolen; great, great-grandchildren, Emerson Powell, Cole Powell and a host of nieces and nephews.
A special Thank You to her caregivers, Jeanetter H. Lawson, Flo M. Heison, Patsy D. Counselman, Arlene Walker and Therese B. Long. She loved each of them, and the family will forever be grateful for the loving care they provided.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Sunday, November 20, 2016 at Lathan Funeral Home in Jackson with the Revs. Forest Weekly and Earl Watson officiating. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Gardens with Lathan Funeral Home directing.
Pallbearers will be Rod Richardson, Greg Mathews, Harry Harrell, John Ryser, Lowell Tarleton and Thomas Mathews.
Honorary pallbearers will be her beloved nieces and nephews.
