Houston L. "Lee" Johnson, 78, of Grove Hill, passed away Monday, March 29, 2022, at the William F. Green State Veterans Home in Bay Minette, AL of complications following surgery for a broken hip. Family members were with him.
He was born in Excel, AL on May 9, 1943, to Wallace Houston and Daisy Marie Davis Johnson.
Lee considered one of his major achievements was to have served 29 years in the U.S. Army where he achieved the highest rank available at the time to an enlisted person. He was Chief Warrant Officer 3. He started as a cook and left as the head of three dozen dining facilities at Fort Stewart, GA.
When he left the military in 1990, he did not stop working. He studied accounting at Alabama Southern and learned woodworking as well. For a time, he built decks around this area. Then, he and his former wife built a successful business, Frames and Frocks, around picture framing, apparel and other retail items until his formal retirement in 2015.
He is survived by his son, Darren (Shelly) Johnson of Warrior, AL; sister, Shirley Johnson of Grove Hill; five grandchildren, Brittany, Eric, Cody, Ian and Dillon and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 1, 2022, at Lathan Funeral Home in Grove Hill with Dr. Johnny Kendrick officiating. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Military honors will be bestowed at the conclusion of the funeral service in Grove Hill. Interment will be at 1 p.m. at Excel Cemetery in Excel, AL.
Active pallbearers are Darren Henson, Tim Kelly, Charles Motes II, Whitney Johnson, Ward Edge and Rodger Barnes.
Honorary pallbearers are the members of VFW Post 5106 of Thomasville, AL.
