Howard S. Jones, 88, of Jackson, passed away Sunday, September 12, 2021 at his residence. He was born in Jackson on December 7, 1932 to Sam Jones and Lillian Mathews Jones. He retired at Boise Cascade and was an active member of The First Baptist Church of Jackson. He was a humble man who greatly cared for his Lord and family who lovingly referred to him as "Poppy." An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing and was also a skilled craftsman, producing many treasured heirlooms for his family
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Rev. Ralph Jones.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy "Dot" Pugh Jones; daughters, Sammie Humphrey, Terri (Wayne) Slayton; grandchildren, Brooke (Justin) Noble, John (Chelsea) Humphrey, Jenilee (Dru) Powell, Matthew (Irina) Humphrey; great-grandchildren, Kameron Humphrey; Dane Powell, Parker Powell, McKenna Humphrey, Knox Noble, Paxton Noble, Nate Humphrey, Penelope Humphrey, Livi Caroline Powell and numerous other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, September 15, 2021 at The First Baptist Church of Jackson with the Rev. Dr. Ben Stubblefield officiating. Nick Binion will be the eulogist and Rev. Brian Jemison the soloist. There will be no public visitation. Interment will follow the service at Trinity Memorial Gardens in Jackson with Lathan Funeral Home directing.
Pallbearers will be Dru Powell, John Humphrey, Matthew Humphrey, Justin Noble, Bubba Rikard and Johnathan Skipper.
All of the great-grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude or The Autism Society of Alabama.
