James Campbell

James “Lou” Lanier Campbell, 80, died January 16, 2021. Mr. Campbell was born July 11, 1940 to James Enoch and Jimmie Bernice Campbell. A lifelong resident of Grove Hill, he was a member of First Baptist Church of Fulton where he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher. He had attended Livingston University on a football scholarship. He was also a member of the Alabama Cattleman’s Association and the Alabama Farmer’s Federation. Mr. Campbell enjoyed refinishing furniture and after retiring from Ciba-Geigy he opened Campbell’s Refinishing Shop. He played softball for years and was a local community favorite on the Keller’s softball team. He loved to visit with friends and talk about the good old days. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and showing dogs.

Mr. Campbell is survived by his wife, Betty F. Campbell; daughters, Lynne C. Davis (Coleman) and Lesley A. Campbell; son-in-law, Bill Graves; grandsons, Clarke Graves and Campbell Graves; siblings, Jane C. Patterson (Mike) and Roger Campbell (Nancy) as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Services will be held Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at Lathan Funeral Home, Grove Hill. Visitation will be from 10:00 am until the service begins at 11:00 am with Bro. Keith Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in Magnolia Lawn Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Daniel Fendley, Landen Fendley, Jeff Davis, Austin Averitt, Phillip Averitt, and Ryan Kearley.

Honorary pallbearers will be Ronnie Pruitt, Sammy Fendley, Jimmy Earl Davis, the Senior Adult Men’s Sunday School Class of the First Baptist Church of Fulton and the deacons of the First Baptist Church of Fulton.

The family would like to offer special thanks to Monroe County Hospital physicians, nurses and staff for their special care of Mr. Campbell.

It is requested that those who attend the services wear a mask and observe an appropriate social distance.
