James "Jack" Edward Toomey passed away peacefully on January 2, 2025, surrounded by family.
Jack was born on May 20, 1930, in Aquilla, Alabama to parents, James Thomas and Esther Cunningham Toomey. He was an Army veteran and was stationed in Korea during his service. Jack worked as a crane operator for Terminal Railroad at the state docks. After retirement, he enjoyed raising cows and working on his farm.
Jack is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy Scarbrough Toomey; his sisters, Eunice Keener and Alice Redding; his brothers, Elvin Toomey and Paul Toomey; and his great grandson, J.B. Toomey.
Jack is survived by his daughters, Shirley (Rodger) Barnes and Wanda (Wayne) Johnston; his son, James Larry (Loria) Toomey; brothers, Rev. Charles Fred Toomey, Carl Austin Toomey, Robert Vernon Toomey, Richard Lloyd Toomey, and James Thomas Toomey, Jr; grandchildren, Shane (Carie) Barnes, Brett Toomey, Ashlee Toomey, Jared (Jennifer) Johnston, and Kim (Randall) Merritt; 8 great grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends.
A Funeral Service will be held Sunday, January 5, 2025, at Aquilla Community Church at 2 p.m. with a visitation 30 minutes prior. Interment will follow the service at Aquilla Cemetery. Bro. Fred Toomey will be officiating the service with Lathan Funeral Home directing.
Pallbearers will be Shane Barnes, Kaleb Barnes, Brayden Barnes, Brett Toomey, Skylar Toomey, Jayden Reed, Jared Johnston, and Atli Johnson.
Honorary pallbearers will be his brothers, Richard Toomey, Carl Toomey, Vernon Toomey, and Tom Toomey, Jr; and friend, Donnie Arrington.
