Janie Jordan

It is with great sadness that the family of Janie Forest Bumpers Jordan announces her passing at the age of 83, on May 27, 2019. Mrs. Janie is survived by her beloved children, Charles Henry “Buddy” Jordan, Jr., Sherri Lee Jordan and her sister, Betty Bumpers Vann.

Mrs. Janie was preceded in death by husband, Dr. Charles H. Jordan (8/25/34 – 5/31/2006), her sister Nell B. Chance (7/2/34 - 5/20/07) and brother Herbert “Bert” Bumpers (7/25/24 – 10/21/97)

Mrs. Janie graduated from Washington County High School, Montevalle Collage (Bachelors in Education) and University of South Alabama (Masters in Education). She taught 3rd and 4th grade at Chatom Elementary School for 29 years.

Mrs. Janie was a member of the Chatom Methodist church where over the course of many years held positions such as Administrator Board Chairperson, Young Adult Sunday School Teacher, Member and Officer of United Methodist Women. Additionally, Mrs. Janie served on several committees such as Church Trustee, Pastor Parish Relations (PPR) Committee and Church Financial Secretary. She was also President and Board member of the Washington County Chapter of the American Cancer Society, Reach and Recovery volunteer, American Red Cross volunteer, Helping Hands volunteer, Chatom Junior Women’s Club, Potpourri Club President, Member of the United Teaching Profession: Washington County, Alabama Education Association (AEA), National Education Association (NEA) and Washington County Retired Teachers Association and Member of Quality Assurance Committee of Department of Human Resources.

Mrs. Janie is remembered for her extraordinary Christian faith, 29 years of teaching in the Chatom Elementary school and her dedication to serving Chatom Community and the Methodist Church. She played a “mean” game of checkers and love to play the card game Hand and Foot with her friends of many years.

A celebration of Mrs. Janie’s life will be held at the Chatom United Methodist church on Thursday, May 30, 2019. Visitation is at 9:00 am followed by a service at 10:00 am and then the interment at Chatom cemetery where she will be laid to eternal rest next to her husband, Dr. Charles H. Jordan.

Pallbearers will be Benjamin Jones, Turner Jones, Andrew Jones, Benjamin “Ben Ben” Jones, Larry Hubbard and Benion Jones.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. and Mrs. Yvonne Hubbard, Burl and Wilene Quimby, Betty Henson, Audrey and Sonny Henson, Jerry Reed and Gina Zulian.

Memorial donations in memory of Mrs. Janie can be made to the Chatom United Methodist Church, Chatom Cemetery and/or the American Cancer Society.
