John Robert Loper, 97 of Chatom, passed away November 19, 2018 at the Washington County Nursing Home. He was born September 3, 1921 to Matt Loper and Lena Baxter Loper in Yellow Pine. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served from 1939 to 1945 in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters of WWII aboard the USS Biloxi and USS Tuskaloosa. He was also a member of the Masons, Shriners and The American Legion. He had been employed with New York Telephone until retirement when he returned to Chatom. A faithful friend to his friends and neighbors, he was always available to lend a hand.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife of 54 years, Eleanor Van Oosten Loper.
Survivors include his children, Donald (Elizabeth) Loper, Valerie Markus; grandchildren, Guy (Rebecca) Markus, Troy Markus, Todd (Katherine) Loper, Jared (Kim) Loper, Reade (Courtney) Loper and six great-grandchildren, Isabela, Gabriel, Bryson, Rowen McKenna and Shepherd.
A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on December 8, 2018 at United Methodist Church, 1251 School St., Chatom, AL 36518.
