John Thomas Shoultz Sr. age 78, died July 11, 2021 at Sacred Heart Hospital, Pensacola, Florida.
John was born March 14, 1943 to John Leonard Shoultz and Dessa Rebecca Atchison Shoultz. John was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Joe Shoultz and Steve Shoultz and his son-in-law William Hughes.
John was a graduate of Jackson High School where he became known as Big John. He received a full scholarship for basketball to Livingston State Teacher College. He went on to obtain a masters degree from the University of Alabama and a second masters degree from the University of South Alabama. Upon graduating from Livingston State Teacher College he was recruited to play football for the Brown's and retained the invitational letter for the rest of his life.
John coached and taught at Citronelle High School and at Citronelle Middle School for 30 years. His favorite sport to coach was baseball and he liked to say he never had a losing season.
John is survived by his wife Ruby Shoultz and children John T. Shoultz Jr (Ginger), Gia Shoultz Hughes, Michael Shoultz (Jamie), Christy Shoultz Thorneycroft(Dr. Ian Thorneycroft). Grand children; Cory Hughes, Lucas Hughes, Megan Shoultz Gifford(Marshall), Maggie Shoultz, Mary Katherine Shoultz, Ashby Thorneycroft, Sage Thorneycroft, Cooper Shoultz, Thomas Thorneycroft, Christina Thorneycroft Shepard(Byron), Victoria Tucker, Chipper Tucker and great grandchild Madelyn Waddill and three nephews and their families.
Funeral services were held at River Hill Baptist Church in the Salitpa Community of Jackson, Al with Shane Tucker as speaker. Interment was in River Hill Baptist Cemetery.
Pallbearers were members of his baseball teams and are as follows: Chip Byrd, Donald Jordan, Ronald Jordan, Tim Miller, Donald Newburn, Bubba Patrick, Byron Skidmore, and Shane Tucker. Honorary pallbearers were all former baseball players for their Coach Shoultz.
