Joseph R. Beverly, Sr., 88 of Jackson, died June 15, 2024, with family by his side. Joseph, who was affectionately known as Joe or Papa Joe, was born May 12, 1936 in Jackson. Joe was simply a southern man. He would fix things rather than replace them and build things rather than buy them. His hunting claim to fame was killing four gobblers with one shot! However, after watching the life leave the eyes of a buck he killed Joe just could not continue and put away his rifle. He did enjoy fishing immensely. He ended up purchasing a boat that he loved dearly and christened "Sho Nuff".
He was a man who loved knowledge; Joe read the dictionary to increase his vocabulary, would make notes of unfamiliar words while reading to later look up, worked crossword puzzles often, studied for years obtaining several degrees, and was a student of history. Joe proudly attended The University of Alabama where he was a member of several honor societies including Omicron Delta Kappa.
As a teen, one of Joe's first jobs was on a shrimp boat, and he was also a printer for the South Alabamian for a time. After working as an educator he went on to work as guidance counselor for Jackson High School for many years as well as serving on the Board of Directors of the CCARC now known as the ARC of Clarke County.
Joe had a peaceful countenance; a way of listening to someone completely that could wash over them and let them know they were safe and that someone truly cared; he was more of a listener than an advisor. At JHS students and teachers alike knew his room as a safe haven; outside work his children, grandchildren, their friends, his friends...practically all who knew him knew his home as a haven of love, patience and peace.
Above all, Joe was a family man. He adored his wife, treasured his children, was devoted to his grandchildren and was mesmerized by his great grandchildren.
Joe is preceded in death by his parents, Fred Ollie Beverly and Sarah Ida Robinson Beverly; siblings, Fred Ollie Beverly, Jr., Sarah Beverly Chastain, John Douglas Beverly, Phililp Lanier Beverly and Ruby Catherine Beverly; and son-in-law, Werner Tarleton.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Anna Watson Beverly; children, Joseph Robinson "Robin" Beverly, Jr. (Stephanie) and Cameron Elizabeth Tarleton; grandchildren, Christy Dawn Beverly, Kristopher Neal "Bama" Beverly, Jason Michael Moore (Jennie Rae), Chelsea Beverly Moorer, Marie Jessica Morgan, Anthony Webster and Leila Tarleton Nichols (Bo); great grandchildren, Carolyn, Molly (Latiana), Roman (Lexi), MacKenzie, Nathan, John Watson "Jack", Corbin, Victoria, Justice, Mary Bo, Rex, Josie, and Joseph; as well as three great-great grandchildren and innumerable nieces, nephews, and extended family.
