Joe Mathews, 80, of Jackson, passed away January 26, 2019 at his residence. He was born February 4, 1938 to Nathan and Vivian Dolbear Mathews. He was an active and faithful parishioner of The Sacred Heart Parish Catholic Church in Grove Hill where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He loved to play guitar, sing and write music and poetry, including the theme song for Boise Cascade where he was employed. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and had a deep consideration of other's feeling. He possessed a quick wit and sense of humor.
A graduate of Jackson High School, he also attended the University of South Alabama and Auburn University and loved Auburn football. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a lifetime member of the VFW.
He leaves behind to cherish his memories his wife, Gene Darlene Heckathorn Mathews; a loving son, Travis Mathews; devoted daughter, Tina Marie Goodman; five grandsons and one granddaughter; five great-granddaughters; three great-grandsons; sister, Doris Mathews Bates and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Services will be conducted at 12 p.m. on Saturday, February 2, 2019 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Grove Hill with Father Travis Burnett officiating. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service. There will also be visitation at Lathan Funeral Home in Jackson on Friday, February 1, 2019 from 6-8 p.m.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, Michael Mathews, Jeremiah Mathews, Joshua Mathews, Jamar Mathews, Jordan Lovett and nephew, Bill Heckathorn.
Honorary pallbearers will be Lamar Reid, Bill Higginbotham, John C. Moore, Roger Mathews and Charles White.
Members of VFW 5355 and Auxiliary will provide military honors.
