Louis Finlay

Louis Malone Finlay, Jr. of Gainestown and Jackson died September 6, 2022 following a brief illness. He was born January 31, 1932 in Mobile to Louis Malone Finlay, Sr. and Sally Smith Finlay. Louis attended the University of Alabama where he was a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity and later graduated with a degree in Business Administration. Having spent most of his career working with M W Smith Lumber Company in Jackson, he was an active tree farmer. He was also a devoted member and former Sr Warden at St. Peters Episcopal Church in Jackson. A lifelong lover of history, Louis volunteered with the Clarke County Historical Society and the Clarke County Museum as well as writing family genealogy books. He and his wife restored the Wilson-Finlay Home and Gainestown School House. Louis enjoyed serving on the Mobile Mardi Gras Court and had proudly served his country in the United States Air Force.

Louis is survived by his children: Elizabeth Finlay Vingi (Robert) and Robert Croom Finlay (Carmen); grandchildren, Marshall Callaway Vingi (Justin), William Rivers Vingi, Louis Malone Vingi and Logan Finlay Hart as well as many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his wife, Laura Croom Rivers Finlay; parents, Louis Malone Finlay, Sr and Sally Smith Finlay; and sister, Betty Finlay Brislin.

A graveside service was held at Gainestown United Methodist Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the White Smith Memorial Library in Jackson, Clarke County Historical Society of Grove Hill or St. Peters Episcopal Church in Jackson.
