Mabel June Fagan

June 13, 1927 — January 13, 2024

Mabel June Fagan, age 96, residing in Briar Glen Alzheimer's Special Care Center in Hoover, Alabama, passed from this life to her eternal home with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, January 13, 2024. "June" or "Junebug," as she was affectionately known by her family, was born on June 13, 1927, in Mannington, West Virginia to Charles and Mona Pearl Shanks. She had five sisters, also deceased; Harriet "Hattie" (Edwin) Snider, Elizabeth "Tat" (Joe) Elekes, Alice Goudy, Mary (James) Robinson, and Jodie (Lynn) Brookes, all of whom she cherished and lovingly referred to her baby sister, Jodie, as her "red rose sister." June also had two brothers (both deceased), Robert (Pearl) Shanks and Don (Gladys) Shanks.

June made her home in Jackson, Alabama for 30+ years with her husband Darrel (deceased) and children, Richard (deceased), Cynde and Doug and lived a total of over 50 years in Jackson. She was well known as "the bread lady" while a resident of Jackson. She enjoyed sharing with friends, family and community and extending friendship to newcomers to the community by way of her ministry of "being the hands and feet of Christ." She was passionate in her witness and love for her Lord, desiring all to know and love Him intimately as she had been privileged to do. June also extended her bread outreach to include communion services for McCann's Chapel, as well as the First United Methodist Church of Mannington, WV, where she made her home close to her daughter, Cynde, for eight years prior to returning to her beloved Alabama. Prior to her recent move to Briar Glen in Hoover, she was a resident for five years at Gardens of Pelham Assisted Living in Pelham, AL.

While living in Jackson, June was an active member of McCann's United Methodist Church for over 30 years, participating in the choir and president of the Women's Missionary Society. She was also a member of the Home Demonstration Club and a volunteer for Reach to Recovery for 15 years, an outreach of the American Cancer Society, established to inform, educate, and encourage women diagnosed with breast cancer. Through Reach to Recovery, June offered comfort to many women, extending hope and demonstrating how to continue living productive lives through having had her own experience with and overcoming breast cancer.

June was preceded in death by her husband Darrel and a devoted son, Richard, her parents and all of her siblings. Surviving loved ones remaining to cherish the memory of this precious mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and friend are her daughter, Cynde (Joe) Freeland of Mannington, WV and Pawley's Island, SC, her devoted granddaughter Amber Freeland of Mannington, WV, her cherished son Doug (Noel) Fagan of Alabaster, AL, and her special grandson Sean Fagan of Alabaster, AL, and her special "sister of heart" French Downey and husband Norman of Grove Hill, AL, along with so many dear friends too numerous to mention, desiring not to exclude any, that she made and cherished in Jackson, AL and Mannington, WV while residing there, as well as the friends she made at the Gardens of Pelham in Pelham, AL.

Family and friends are invited to a celebration of life to be held at Lathan Funeral Home in Jackson, Alabama on Saturday, January 20, 2024, with services being held at 2:00 PM with the Reverend Dr. Neil Epler and the Reverend Earl Watson officiating. Visitation will be at 1:00 PM and interment at Trinity Memorial Gardens on the Walker Springs Road will be immediately following the services. Condolences may be offered at www.lathanfuneralhome.com
