Marie Henson

Marie Elizabeth Blount Henson, 97, of Hawthorn entered into rest Thursday, February 12, 2015, at Washington County Nursing Home. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 14th, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Washington Baptist Church (New) in Deerhead, Alabama. Visitation will be one hour prior. Interment will follow at Old Washington Baptist Church Cemetery, Hawthorn. Rev. Bruce Sheffield will officiate.



Mrs. Henson was the daughter of Lula Ruth Napper and John Wilson Blount, born on October 10, 1917 in Bigbee, Washington County, Alabama on Pine Barren Creek. She attended schools at Wagarville and Leroy High School, where she graduated in1935. She entered Livingston Teachers College in the fall of 1935 on a NYA work program. Marie graduated and entered employment as a teacher at Chatom elementary school, and later taught at McIntosh elementary.




Marie owned a ceramics shop where she spent many happy hours with friends and family. She was an avid historian, and contributed regular verbal and written accounts to the Washington County Historical Society. Marie was a member of Washington Baptist Church where she faithfully served in many capacities throughout the years.



Marie married Robert Lee Henson on April 22, 1938. Marie and Robert built their home in Hawthorn, Alabama where they resided for the remainder of their lives. Marie was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years. Marie is lovingly remembered by her son, Robert Edward Henson, also a resident of Hawthorn, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
