Martha Ellen Hodge Wynn, 65, of Frankville, passed away January 31, 2024 at University Hospital surrounded by her husband and children. Lovingly known as "Girlfriend," Martha lived loud and loved big and made an impact wherever she went. Her cackling laughter and brilliant smile will be missed.
Born on November 12, 1958 to Grover Daffin Hodge and Martha Nathalee Autry Hodge, she graduated from Coffeeville High School in 1976 and married her true love, Daniel Wynn on July 23 of the same year. She raised her girls, Shannon and Jamie before entering college at the University of Mobile in 1997 and was a Magna Cum Laude graduate with honors distinctions.
Martha found her professional calling when she began working for the Alabama Community College System at Alabama Southern in 2005. She had a variety of roles throughout her tenure, but most enjoyed working with students as an academic coach and seeing them reach their goals.
Martha made her home in Frankville, but her "home away from home" became Jackson Lake Island in Millbrook where she walked daily and enjoyed a waterfront view after finishing her workdays at J.F. Ingram State Technical College. Her weekends were spent with Danny on home renovations, fishing, boat riding and planning projects. With her daughters and grandchildren, she enjoyed planning parties, baking, crafts, decorating, encouraging, supporting, correcting, loving, and always planning the next adventure. She was a fun, vibrant mother who expected the best and a vivacious grandmother who doted, spoiled and showed up for her grandchildren.
Martha leaves to cherish her memories her devoted husband, Danny; daughters, Shannon (Mark) Courington and Jamie (Murray) Sikes; grandson, Weston (Shayla) Whitewolf; granddaughters, Tatum Courington and Whitley Sikes; and great-granddaughter, Emerson Whitewolf. Her sister, Diane (Terry) Hooper and brother, Wendell (Candace) Hodge treasure the memory of the one who was their big sister and biggest supporter. She is also survived by her aunts, Patricia Harvey, Ida Campbell, and Gracie York; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, many cousins, friends, co-workers and former students.
The family will welcome friends on Sunday, February 4, 2024 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Ulcanush Baptist Church. A celebration of Martha's life will take place on Monday, February 5, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Ulcanush Baptist Church, officiated by her nephew, Taylor Wynn and Jessie Griffith.
Pallbearers are Neil Hooper, Mark Ganus, Bob York, Kirk York, David Harvey, Dustin Harvey, Russell Harvey, and Weston Whitewolf. Honorary pallbearers are Joffrey Moore and Steve Mitchell.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to causes that Martha supported: the Ronald McDonald House, St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, The Winters School of Music at William Carey University, the Jackson Academy playground, and Mobile's Singing Children.
