Mary Cornelia Harrell Cobb, 94, of Grove Hill, passed away July 15, 2019 at Grove Hill Memorial Hospital. She was born November 23, 1924 to Sim Jasper Harrell and Sallie Leona Horton Harrell. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in the Winn community, but had attended Antioch Baptist Church in her youth. She enjoyed cooking, quilting, sewing, and crochet. Mary was a woman who knew her mind and was not afraid to share it with others. Known for her “big personality,” Mary kept everyone laughing, and continues to even now, as we review her final wishes.
While born in small Antioch, Alabama, Mary would go on to live in eight states and four countries (USA, Malta, Iran, and Indonesia). Her extensive world travels took her throughout Europe and Asia.
Mary and Frank W. Cobb married January 23, 1943 in Lucedale, Mississippi. Following an adventurous life together (4 months shy of 70 years), Frank passed away on September 4, 2012. She was also preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Denny Harrell, Tollie “Tee” Harrell, Maxine Presnall, and Dell Presnall.
She is survived by her children, Joe (Patsy) Cobb, Bill (Paulette) Cobb, Danny (Kathy) Cobb; grandchildren, Jason (Stephanie) Cobb, Julia (Steven) Koon, Jonathan (Michelle) Cobb, Jennifer Cobb, Misti Cobb, Jay Cobb, April (Tim) Paul, Daniel (Lauren) Cobb, Kristen Anderson; great-grandchildren, Anna Cobb, Zoe Cobb, Joe Cobb, Alex Koon, Ella Katherine Koon, Randy Flores, Abigail Cobb, Randall Cobb, Dustin Cobb, Zach Paul, Jacob Paul, Hendrix Cobb, Carlos Anderson, and numerous other relatives and friends. Mary’s extended family included Ora Mae Russell and Pat Butts who were her caregivers for the last 4 years, they helped ensure that Mary remained feistily independent.
Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, July 18, 2019 at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. Johnny Gillis, Dan Finney, and Rev. Deacon Tikhon Jason Cobb officiating. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with Lathan Funeral Home directing.
Pallbearers will be Jonathan Cobb, Daniel Cobb, Tim Paul, Zach Paul, Jacob Paul, Randy Flores, Steven Koon, and Alex Koon.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be offered to St. Jude’s or the American Heart Association.
