Nell Dunn Smith

Nell Dunn Smith, 88, of Jackson, passed away Thursday, January 14, 2021 at Jackson Health Care Facility. She was born in Grove Hill on January 19, 1932 to Willie S. Sheffield and Sadie Skipworth Sheffield. She was a member of The First Baptist Church of Jackson and had co-owned Lou Nell’s Fashions, a retail clothing store in Chatom for many years. She enjoyed cooking, raising flowers and was very detail oriented and insisted that things be kept in a precise order.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, L.D. Dunn and siblings, Willie B. (Dorothy) Sheffield, Henry Lee (Patsy) Sheffield, Ralph (Elaine) Sheffield, Katherine (Eddie) Sessions, Alda Rae (Joe) Woolfolk, Clarice Hoven and infant, Grady Sheffield.
She is survived by her husband, Arnold E. Smith; children, Dwight (Sonya) Dunn, Kay (Dwain “Cat”) Odom; grandchildren, Hannah (Matt) Jackson, Joshua (Heather) Dunn, Kristin (Bucky) Donald, Jon (Shannon) Odom, Holly (Rodney) McCain, Eric (Casey) Odom; great-grandchildren, Kayci Donald, Lauren Donald, Jon Collie Odom, Will Odom, Molli McCain, Meradith McCain, Gracie Claire Odom, Chloe Odom; siblings, Ray (Jane) Sheffield, Larry Gene (Marie) Sheffield; brother-in-law, Fred Hoven; special friend, Diane (Roger) Dean; numerous other relatives and friends.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 16, 2021 at Chatom Town Cemetery with Dr. Johnny Kendrick officiating and Lathan Funeral Home directing.
Pallbearers will be Joshua Dunn, Matt Jackson, Eric Odom, Jon Odom and Rodney McCain.
Bucky Donald and all of her nieces and nephews will serve as honorary pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be the Ronald McDonald House or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
