Nettie Marks McLendon, 91, of Jackson, Alabama, passed away peacefully on February 23, 2025. She was born on January 26, 1934, in Jackson to parents Rudolph and Mary Thompson Marks. She was the oldest of seven children and was called "Sister" by all who knew her and loved her. Nettie met the love of her life, S.E. "Mac" McLendon and they were married on June 17, 1951. Their only child, Shirley, was born the following year. Before Mac's death in 2010, the couple celebrated 50 years of marriage. Nettie truly enjoyed being an Air Force wife; she and Shirley got to see parts of the world never seen by most. With Mac waiting for them in the Philippines, Nettie and Shirley finally arrived after a long three-week journey by ship. Being the beauty that she was at the time, it was no surprise that she was chosen "Princess of the Voyage" and got to dance with the captain of the ship. She was very proud of that title and never let anyone forget it! Mac had waited eleven months to meet his daughter. The family had lived in the Philippines, Japan, Texas, Arizona, and Arkansas before settling in their hometown of Jackson, Alabama after Mac retired. Nettie was a very spiritual lady and was a member of Evergreen Baptist Church since childhood; she faithfully attended services until her health declined.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sister, Lorraine Marks Wacker of Louisville, Kentucky and her many precious Pekingese "babies".
She is survived by her daughter, Shirley McLendon Gregory; sister, Ethel Blackwell; brothers, Warren Marks, Roy (Bobbie) Marks, Fred (Louise) Marks, and Alfred (Margaret) Marks; grandchildren, Ricky (Darby) Graziano of Redmond, Oregan and Lesley (James) Earls of Springfield, Missouri; great grandchildren, Keenan, Conner, and Kyler Graziano of Redmond, Oregan, and Dorian and Adrien Earls of Springfield, Missouri.
Services will be held at Lathan Funeral Home, Jackson on Thursday, February 27, 2025. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the funeral service begins at 11:00 a.m. with Dr. Brian Jemison officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Gardens where Nettie will be laid to rest with her beloved Mac beside her.
