Rachel Carolyn Shipp, or grandma (Nookie), as she was lovingly known to her family, was a kindhearted and selfless woman who always put the needs of others before herself. Born on September 24, 1931, in Fruitdale, Alabama, Rachel was dedicated to raising her family, especially her special needs son, Lewis. On April 4, 2023, at the age of 91, Rachel peacefully passed away at her home in Fruitdale, Alabama, surrounded by her family.
Rachel was a loving mother to Lewis Shipp and Carolyn (Johnny) Younge. She leaves behind two grandsons, Phillip (Joanie) Younge and Matthew (Lesley) Younge. Also left to cherish her memory are four great grandchildren, Austin Younge, Madison Younge, Carly Younge, and Landon Younge. Her two nieces, Vicky (Robert) Hartley and Charlotte (William) Guy, and her nephew, Bo Preston will also cherish their memories with their Aunt Rachel. She is preceded in death by her husband, Bill Shipp, parents Lewis and Katie Preston, brother Jack Preston and son-in-law Buddy Younge.
A gathering to celebrate the life of Rachel Shipp will take place Thursday, April 6, 2023, at Lathan Funeral Home in Chatom, Alabama from 6-9 p.m. On April 7, 2023, the funeral service will take place at South Oak Grove Baptist Church in Fruitdale, Alabama beginning at 11 a.m. with the burial service to follow at South Oak Grove Cemetery. The funeral service will be officiated by Rev. Don Lee with Robert Hartley, Bo Preston, Phillip Younge, Matthew Younge, Austin Younge, and Brandon Hartley as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Edward Lomax, Johnny Younge, Brett Zirlott, William Guy, and Pee-Wee Davidson. Please keep her family in prayer as they have lost a great pillar in their family.
