Robert Downey

Robert C. "Bobby" Downey, 91, of Grove Hill, passed away Thursday, July 22, 2021 at his residence. He was born in Mobile on December 3, 1929 to Julius Evans Downey and Mildred Crenshaw Downey. A member of Grove Hill Baptist Church, he was retired with the engineering department of the Clarke County Commission. He had been very active in the civic affairs of the community, serving on the Board of Registrars, Grove Hill Memorial Hospital Board for 29 years, Grove Hill Water Board for 19 years, a term on the Grove Hill Town Council and the Grove Hill Clinic Board. He was also a member of the Civitan Club and Jr. Chamber of Commerce.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Alice McIntyre Downey and son, Phillip R. Downey.
He is survived by his sons, Keith (Ricka) Downey, Robin N. (Tracey) Downey; grandchildren, Morgan (Tyler) Elliott, Drew Downey, Seth Downey; step-grandchildren, Sidney Drew, Charis Dunlap; great-granddaughter, Scarlett Marie Elliott; step great-grandchildren, Oliver Hester, Rihan Shelby; sister, Anita Bush and numerous other relatives and friends.
A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 25, 2021 at Magnolia Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service at Lathan Funeral Home in Grove Hill.
Pallbearers will be Henry Crenshaw, Drew Downey, Seth Downey, Tyler Elliott, Stan Hutto, Larry Newsom, Don Wright and Patrick Wright.
Honorary pallbearers will be Eddie Crenshaw and his coffee drinking friends who gathered at Bertiles.
