Rev. Robert "Bobby" Henri Smith, 85, of Chatom, passed away July 13, 2015 at Washington County Hospital. He was born April 28, 1930. A Southern Baptist minister for 63 years, he served as a chaplain for the Chatom Police Department and the Washington County Commission, served for 16 years as the Washington County Coroner, owned Smith Ambulance Service and worked as an emergency medical technician. He also completed four tours of the Holy Land and was a graduate of the Billy Graham School of Evangelism. In 2008, he was awarded the United Way Humanitarian of the Year and was inducted into the Washington County Hall of Fame in 2010.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty H. Smith of Chatom; daughters Brenda (Mark) Beech and Karen (Kevin) Taylor , both of Chatom; grandchildren, Shae (Ben) Givens of Chatom, Rusty (Natalie) Beech of Birmingham and Kurt Taylor of Grove Hill; and great-grandchildren, Valerie Givens, Max Bracamonte, Kate Givens, all of Chatom and Ellie Beech of Birmingham.
Funeral services will be Thursday, July 16, 2015 at the Chatom Community Center at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Ricky Revett and Bro. James Watkins officiating. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Interment will follow at Chatom Cemetery with Lathan Funeral Home directing.
Pallbearers will be Mark Beech, Kevin Taylor, Rusty Beech, Kurt Taylor, Kenneth Brown and Tommy Brown.
