Ruth Adell Rivers, 84 of Daphne, formerly of McIntosh, passed away on October 17, 2024, at The Retreat Hospice by SAAD in Mobile with her family by her side, after a seven-year battle with cancer. She was born on March 21, 1940, in Dixons Mills, Alabama.
She was a member of McIntosh United Methodist Church from the age of 11. As an adult, she sang in the choir, served on the board, and taught Sunday school for over thirty years. For many years, she organized the Memorial Day service, honoring our fallen veterans.
She was employed by Ciba-Geigy, and Ciba Specialty Chemicals for over 36 years, retiring in 1997.
Through the 1970s and 1980s, she worked to support McIntosh Christian Academy, serving on the school board, parent-teacher organization, and quarterback club. She also worked and organized many fundraising events over the years to help support the school financially.
She was a dedicated member of McIntosh Rescue Squad, for over twenty-five years. Serving the community as an Emergency Medical Technician, where you'd often find her in the back of an ambulance caring for someone in need. She was a driving force in organizing and working fundraising events to purchase needed emergency equipment.
A very giving person, she was always thinking of others, making quilts, pillows, and doll clothes to give to children of friends and relatives. She enjoyed cooking and baking for others, especially her locally famous Teacake cookies and Christmas candy.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John William Rivers, and Hattie Ruth Newton Rivers, Sisters, Lena Evelyn Rivers Agee, Emma Belle Rivers Nichols, Mary Jewel Rivers Flinn, Brothers, Ira Douglas Rivers, John Benton Rivers, Sr, Norman David Rivers, Nephews, Christopher David Rivers, John Benton Rivers Jr.
Survived by her son James Rivers of Daphne, AL, Sister, Faye Fendley of Thomasville, AL. Brother, William Rivers (Sybil) of Malcolm, AL, Nephews, Ronald Fendley (Sandra), Gerry Fendley (Dianne), Tim Fendley (Vickie) of Thomasville, AL, Nieces, Deana Swanson (Rusty) of Thomasville, AL, Velda Summers (Robert) of Maryville, TN, Teri Viduna (David) of Cumming, GA, Teresa Johnson of Kensington, MD, Carmon Flinn on Fort Walton Beach, FL, and very special friends Dan and Nancy McConaghy of Spanish Fort, AL.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Officers of the Daphne, Alabama Police Department.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 24, 2024, at McIntosh United Methodist Church Cemetery with The Rev. Thack H. Dyson officiating and Lathan Funeral Home directing. Online condolences may be shared at www.lathanfuneralhome.com
