Sally Garris

Sally Stryker Garris, 86, of Leroy, passed away peacefully on July 13, 2024, at her home after a long battle with bladder cancer. She was born in Columbia, Mississippi on September 9, 1937, and was reared in Chatom, Alabama. She graduated from Washington County High School and Auburn University, with a degree in Elementary Education. Mrs. Garris was a member of the Phi Mu Sorority and fell in love with Auburn; she was a true die-hard fan. Sally was a wonderful mother, sister, friend, cook, and teacher. We hate to tell everyone, but she never gave anyone her 'real' tomato pie recipe. She taught for several years at Jackson Academy and Reed's Chapel. She loved her students and would go out of her way to help them. She was an active member of Pine Grove United Methodist Church.

Sally was preceded in death by her parents Ruby and Harold Stryker, husband Tom Garris, brother Dude Stryker, sister Mary Hall (Mack) Jones, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Carol and Reinard Green.

She is survived by her sons Bo (Kim) Garris, of St. Stephens, Chuck Garris, of St. Stephens, Mary Asher (Ed) Rivenbark, of Covington, LA. Five grandchildren whom she loved more than anything, Trey Garris, of Foley, AL, Mary Charles Rivenbark, of Franklinton, LA, Mallie, of Starkville, MS, Whitt Rivenbark, and Ryn Rivenbark of Covington, LA.

The family would like to thank the people of Washington and Clarke Counties for all the love shown to Sally during her illness. A special thanks to Nicki and Ashley McKee, Gail Garris, Ms. Vicki Cooper, and Louise Williams for all the love and support, especially during these last several months.

Memorial Services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 15, 2024, with a visitation starting at 10 a.m. at Lathan Funeral Home in Jackson with the Rev. Chip Oakley officiating. Online condolences may be shared at www.lathanfuneralhome.com
