Shirley Burge

March 26, 1925 — August 23, 2015

Shirley Ann Whatley Burge, 90, of Grove Hill, passed away August 23, 2015 at her residence. She was born March 26, 1925. She was employed with the Clarke County Board of Education at CCHS as a teacher's aide and secretary. An avid football fan, she loved all the teams from high school, college and professional ranks. She was a member of Grove Hill United Methodist Church.


She was preceded in death by her husband, Isaac "Ike" P. Burge; siblings, Elizabeth Whatley Sadler, George Richard Whatley, Joseph Ramon Whatley, Gene Max Whatley and Jane Marie Whatley Pritchett.


She is survived by her children, Wallace Wayne (Betty) Burge of Poquoson, VA, Richard Powers (Linda) Burge of Northport, Armond Lawrence "Larry" (Lorraine) Burge of Huntsville; siblings, Ray Edward Whatley of Lake Junaleska, N.C., William Douglas (Betty) Whatley of Atlanta, GA; sisters-in-law, Ida May Bell of Grove Hill and Jean G Whatley of Monroeville; brother-in-law Floyd D Pritchett of Whatley; dear friend, Becky Cotton of Walker Springs; 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.


Funeral services will be Thursday, August 27, 2015 at 11 a.m. at Grove Hill United Methodist Church with Revs. Dr. Herbert Sadler and Mike Pearson officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at the church. Interment will be at Grove Hill Cemetery with Lathan Funeral Home directing.


Pallbearers will be Rick Highfield, Berry Salder, Gene Pritchett, David Whatley, Kenny Pritchett, Charles Burge, Henry Burge and Bubba Pritchett.


In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made to Grove Hill United Methodist Church.
