Shirley Ann Hickson, 77, of Grove Hill, passed away April 25, 2021 at Azalea Gardens Nursing Home in Mobile. She was born in Gove Hill on April 19, 1944 to Furman F. Hickson and Eleanor Harrison Hickson, both of whom preceded her in death. She earned numerous degrees in history at Judson college, The University of Alabama and a Ph.D. in History at The University of South Carolina. She taught numerous history classes, but she had a special love for British history, particularly events surrounding the monarchy. She was a member of The South Carolina Baptist Historical Society, South Carolina Historical Association and South Carolina Historical Society. She was very strong in her Christian faith and had been a member of The First Baptist Church of Greer in South Carolina until she returned to Grove Hill where she also joined The First Baptist Church. She loved travel and had toured England twice as well as many locations throughout the United States.
She is survived by her brother, Charles (Nell) Hickson; niece and nephews, Sam Wimberley, Jr., Angie (Mike) Hoven, Chris (Sabrina) Wimberley; great-nieces and nephews, Colby Wimberley, Ansley (Beau) Brayars, Garrett (Brii) Hoven, Montana (Bryce) McInnis, Landon Christian and great, great-niece, Aubrey Kate Bryars.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 28, 2021 at Lathan Funeral Home in Grove Hill with the Revs. William Allison and Randy Boone officiating. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow the service at Union Baptist Church Cemetery in Grove Hill with Lathan Funeral Home directing.
Pallbearers will be Beau Brayers, Landon Christian, Garrett Hoven, Mike Hoven, Chris Wimberley and Sam Wimberley, Jr.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a favorite charity or the Alzheimer's or Parkinson's research foundations.
