Shirley Johnson

Shirley Ann Johnson, 81, of Grove Hill, passed into eternity with Christ on December 23, 2023, at the Mobile Infirmary in Mobile, Alabama. She was born on December 27, 1941, in Excel to Wallace Houston and Daisy Marie Davis Johnson. She served as a dedicated member of Tompkins Baptist Church in Grove Hill.

A true Johnson, with a keen wit and big heart, Ms. Johnson was a woman of excellence, determination, commitment, and faith. She was loyal to her family and friends, and a compassionate caregiver to her brothers: Jim, Windy, Walter, and Lee.

Ms. Johnson started her career in insurance at Connecticut General Corporation in the 1969 and lived all over the United States, continuing with CIGNA until her retirement as a director in the early 90s. After her return to Grove Hill, she worked at the Clarke County Probation Office.

Shirley leaves to honor her memory, a host of cousins and those who call her "Aunt Shirley". They know her as an example of hard work, a champion of education, and one determined to reach her potential, all while leaving things better than they were when she found them.

The family of Ms. Johnson is grateful for all the expressions of sympathy and love that has been shown to them during their time of bereavement. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tompkins Baptist Church Building Fund.

Pallbearers will be Thomas Armistead, Rodger Barnes, Ward Edge, Darren Henson, Tim Kelly, Patrick Wright, and her Tompkins Baptist Church Adult III Sunday School Class.

Funeral Services will be Thursday, December 28, 2023, at 11 a.m. with a visitation one hour prior at Tompkins Baptist Church with Dr. Johnny Kendrick, officiating and Lathn Funeral Home directing. Interment will follow the service at the Excel Cemetery in Excel, Alabama.
