Sidney Wayne Hinton, age 75, of Chatom, AL, passed away at his residence on July 24, 2021, while surrounded by his wife and children. He was born in Mobile, AL, on March 4, 1946, to James J. Hinton, Sr., and Lydia Pierce Hinton. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army National Guard, and he served as an educator for 37 years. He spent the last 27 of those years as principal of Washington County High School. He was a member of Chatom Baptist Church, Kappa Sigma fraternity, Phi Delta Kappa fraternity, AEA, and the Alabama Principal's Association. He was active in the Chatom Dixie League Baseball program, and he served as its first president.
Wayne is survived by his wife of 50 years, Andrea Wiik Hinton; children Andrew James (Courtney) Hinton, Justin Wayne Hinton, Julianne Evelyn (Clay) Massey; grandchildren Bryce Hinton, Reed Hinton, Sydney Kate Massey, and Andrew Massey; siblings Bobby O'Neal (Carol) Hinton, Patsy Hinton (John) Fincher, James J. (Joyce) Hinton, Jr., and many other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his brothers Bardia Hinton and Rocky Dale Hinton.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Washington County High School auditorium on Tuesday, July 27, 2021. Visitation will be from 9-11, and the service at 11, with Dr. Robert Kirkland officiating. Comments will be made by close friends Wayne Blackwell and David Wofford. Following the service, interment will be at the Chatom Cemetery.
Pallbearers are John Hinton, Rodney Hinton, Joel Wiik, Julian Wiik, Morgan Trent, and Dan Goodman.
