Susan Gordon Jones died peacefully in her home surrounded by family members on April 30, 2020, after a long struggle with cancer. Susan was born to William E. (Dooley) and Vivian H. Gordon on November 21, 1953, in Grove Hill, Alabama. She grew up there, playing with her siblings and numerous life-long friends. In 1972, she graduated from Clarke County High School. From there, she attended Judson College and later, Livingston University. Susan made many more friends along the way. She was a lifelong member of Grove Hill United Methodist Church.
Susan raised two children with her husband. She spent much of her time with them in the outdoors, riding bicycles, fishing, flying kites, and countless other activities. Susan spent her career as a much-loved elementary school physical education teacher. In that capacity, she influenced the lives of hundreds of children. Following her teaching career, she volunteered with many local community organizations, including playing the clarinet for the Thomasville community band, The Flying Bricks. One of her greatest joys was playing with her grandsons.
Susan is survived by Randy Jones, her husband of thirty-eight years; two children, Will Jones (Christie) and Dacy Jones; two grandchildren, Chapman Jones and Campbell Jones; her aunt, Sue Coleman; two brothers, John Gordon (Brenda) and Steve Gordon (Annell); first cousin, Daryl Haskew (Brenda); nieces and nephews, and many, many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Jimmy Finley.
A graveside service will be conducted at Magnolia Lawn Cemetery in Grove Hill at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 2, 2020 with the Revs. Reba Wiley and Chris Walker officiating and Lathan Funeral Home directing.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made in her honor to the Regional Child Advocacy Center, 127 W. Cobb Street, Grove Hill, AL 36451 (
