Tommie Smith

August 17, 1927 — February 4, 2022

Tommie Smith, Jr., 94, of Coffeeville, passed away Friday, February 4, 2022, at his residence surrounded by family. He was born August 17, 1927, in Sweet Water. A proud veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served during World War II. He had been employed at J.B. Hunt as a truck driver, but he owned and operated an auto parts store in Coffeeville for many years. He served two terms as the mayor of Coffeeville and served three terms on the town council prior to being elected mayor. He was also a member of the Coffeeville Volunteer Fire Department. A loving, devoted husband and father, he enjoyed spending time with his family and his church family at New Faith Baptist Church in Coffeeville where he was also a deacon. He enjoyed hunting and watching Alabama football. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tommie Smith, Sr., Shellie Downey Smith and brother, James Cecil Smith. He is survived by his wife, Jean Morgan Smith; sons, Danny (Sandra) Smith, Randy (Roxanne) Smith; daughters, Brenda Hobart, Debbie Parkerson, Sandy Smith; grandchildren, Jeremy Parkerson, Josh (Jessica) Smith, Chris Smith, Gabby Anderson, Ashley Renee Shelton, Gailyn Smith, Drew Smith; great-grandchildren, Railynn Parkerson, McKenna Parkerson, Carly O'Brien, Zane Shelton, Sawyer Smith; siblings, Peggy Traveen, Walter Earl "Roy" (Evelyn) Smith and numerous other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, February 9, 2022, at New Faith Baptist Church in Coffeeville with the Revs. Chris Ozment and Doug Price officiating. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Interment will follow the service at Ulcanush Baptist Cemetery in Coffeeville with Lathan Funeral Home directing. Pallbearers will be Brian James, Jason James, Zachary Roberts, Chris Smith, Drew Smith and Joshua Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be Ronnie Craft, Roy Dunagan, Joe James, Billy Robinson, Wendell White and Ernest Williams. Condolences may be offered at www.lathanfuneralhome.com.
