Walter Benjamin Jones

July 28, 1940 — December 25, 2024

Walter Benjamin Jones was born July 28, 1940 in Lucedale, Mississippi to Lou Hurst and Rev Mack Jones.

Ben graduated from Auburn High School and Livingston University with a B.A. in history. He grew up in Chatom, Alabama. In 1963, he married Mary Binion Turner. They had three children; Benjamin Edward (Tina), Elizabeth Mitchell (Kenny), and Binion Turner (Tabitha). He was a wonderful Poppa to 8 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter.

Ben was a councilman and later fire chief for the Town of Chatom. He was a member of Chatom United Methodist Church.

Ben retired from Ciba-Geigy with over 30 years of service. After retirement, he and Mary moved to Dauphin Island where his full time job was baiting hooks and repairing bicycles for his grandchildren. He enjoyed dabbling in horticulture and could grow just about anything from a cutting. After family trips, he was known to return home with a shirt pocket full of cuttings to root.

Ben is preceded in death by his parents Lou and Rev Mack Jones and his siblings Mack Jones, Ray Jones and Martha Lou Davis.

Graveside Service will be held Monday, December 30, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. in Chatom Cemetery with Rev. Holley Moralis officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to Washington County Animal Rescue 648 Seaboard Road Tibbie, AL 36583 in memory of Ben.
